Taking civic and political engagement to the next level, Indiana Muslim Advocacy Network (IMAN Associates) brings the Hoosier Muslim community a presence and a voice at the Indiana Statehouse. It advocates for or against legislation that may affect the community and strives to bring positive civic and political changes in the state of Indiana. After reaching consensus within the Muslim community, Bias Crimes bill, Redistricting Reform and Anti-Bullying bill (the latter signed into a law) were among the legislations that the organization advocated for their passage in the 2018 Indiana Legislative Session.
The recent police brutality and the racial outcry from the African American community is a reminder that systemic racism remains a paramount challenge in the face of building equity in our communities. Citing justice and equity as two Islamic values that guide IMAN Associates, combating racial injustices alongside other faith and civic organizations naturally ranks as one of the organization’s top priorities. IMAN Associates joined faith-based and local organizations in two preliminary meetings with the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus (IBLC) to learn about their agenda for the 2021 legislative session and what role it can play in advocating for racial justice.
One of the most fundamental components of our legislative advocacy is to build bridges with our state legislators. We inform them about their Muslim constituents and concerns relevant to those constituents. IMAN Associates is proud to serve as the liaison between the Indiana Muslim community and elected officials and public policy leaders.
